Stamatia Scarvelis prepares to throw in final round of shot put competition at Simplot Games, Pocatello Idaho

Stamatia Scarvelis, one of the nation’s top returning high school throwers, began her 2013 campaign with a big win at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho.

Competing against top athletes assembled from around the USA and Canada, Scarvelis opened the prelims with a solid throw of 46′ 11″ to take the lead in the first of three rounds of throwing.

Her next throw – a nation-leading 49′ 6″ – iced the competition and won the event.

Her series was impressive show of strength with four throws of 48′ or better. Scarvelis, a junior at Dos Pueblos High, won the California CIF State title in the girls shot put in Clovis last June.

The Simplot Games are billed as North America’s premier indoor high school track and field meet. Scarvelis is coached by Kent Pagel, one of the nation’s most respected track and field throws coaches.
