BBK: DP steps up in 2nd half, beats Mission Bay

Cruz Mertens buried five 3-pointers and scored 24 points, and C.J. Zajic recorded a double double to lead Dos Pueblos to a 59-45 non-league win at Mission Bay in San Diego on Saturday.

“It was a tough road game for us,” DP coach Joe Zamora said. “We came out sluggish and gave up some easy shots to their talented guards.”

The Chargers (12-5) trailed 26-18 at halftime. They stepped up their defensive intensity and attacked the basket in the second half. They outscored Mission Bay 23-10 in the third quarter and 18-9 in the fourth quarter.

Zajic keyed the second-half surge with 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Erik Olson hit a couple of big shots and Chris Williams did a nice job directing the offense, said Zamora.
