Record 13th straight win clinches title tie for SBCC

Santa Barbara City College aced its tests on Wednesday night with a record-breaking sweep that secured at least a share of the WSC North women’s volleyball title. The 17th-ranked Vaqueros recorded 13 aces in a 25-4, 25-16, 25-19 sweep at Hancock.

It was the 13th straight victory, breaking the school record of 12 set by the 2009 squad. The Vaqueros (15-6, 9-0) also assured themselves of at least a tie for their third WSC title in the last four years.

The Vaqueros have won 27 of 29 sets in conference this year with seven sweeps.

SBCC is 37-4 in conference play since 2009. Santa Barbara can complete a perfect WSC campaign and win the title outright with a victory at second-place Moorpark (8-1) on Friday in the regular-season finale.

Jenna Anderson had seven kills and nine aces and Emily Banas added seven kills, eight digs and one ace. Katie Dolan and Jasmine Ward had four kills apiece.

Anderson had an eight-point serving run in the first set. The Bulldogs (2-16, 0-9) played much better in the last two sets, building a 10-1 lead in set No. 3. Banas served eight consecutive points to tie it at 11.

After the Vaqueros forged a small lead, Savannah Morton served two aces to end the match.

“You have to realize in every match, we’re the team that people want to knock off,” said coach Ed Gover. “You have to go into each match with respect for the opponent. Our goal is always to play 2 percent better each night.”
