Playoff update: Royals to host No. 2 seed Marymount



San Marcos won a coin-flip and will play No. 2-seeded Marymount at home Thursday in a second-round CIF 1-AA girls volleyball playoff match. First serve is at 7 p.m.

The Royals (20-11) are coming off a sweep over Long Beach Millikan in their first playoff match in several years.

Marymount (25-5) will be a challenge for the Royals. The Sailors are ranked 20th in the country by MaxPreps. They recently finished as runners-up at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, falling to undefeated Archbishop Mitty in five sets.

Also earning a home match on Thursday is Cate. The Rams will host top-seeded Pacifica Christian of Santa Monica. In the same 4-A Division, Laguna Blanca must travel to Gladstone for its second-round match.

In boys water polo, Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos will host first-round games on Thursday. The Channel League-champion Dons play Great Oak at 4 p.m., while the Chargers entertain Vista Murrieta at 5 p.m.

Tuesday’s wild-card winners, San Marcos and Carpinteria, travel for the next round. The Royals head to Murrieta Valley and Carpinteria goes to La Quinta.
