DP’s Fernandez runs to CIF title; Zerrenner takes 3rd

Bryan Fernandez won the Division 2 individual boys title, but Dos Pueblos fell short of its quest to win the team title at the CIF-SS Cross Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday.

Fernandez became the first CIF section cross country champion for Dos Pueblos.

Running on Mt. SAC’s shorter (2.96-mile) rain course, he won in 14:06, edging out Austin Goins of Canyon-Anaheim and Garrett Corcoran of Villa Park by two seconds. The Charger senior is 9-0 in races this season. DP’s Max Davis came in eighth place in 14:19.

Westlake, with three runners placing in the top 35, won the boys team title with 115 points. Dos Pueblos finished in fifth place with 185 points. Saugus, Redondo Union and Ayala finished third through fourth.

Andrew McGuan was the third Charger finisher in 49th in 14:55. He was followed by John Greening, 75th in 15:12; Cole Smith, 81st in 15:15; Ben York, 89th in 15:22 and Tyler Bradford, 105th in 15:41.

In the girls race, DP junior Addi Zerrenner finished third in 16:30. Paige Tennison of Newport Harbor took first place in 16:13 and Samantha Ortega of Saugus came in second in 16:26.

Fernandez, Zerrenner and the DP boys team all qualified for next week’s CIF State Meet in Fresno.
