Cid carries Vaqueros to first win

Robert Cid scored 14 points on Saturday and Logan Louks’ layup put SBCC ahead to stay in a 66-64 men’s basketball victory over Cuyamaca. The Vaqueros (1-1) claimed third place in the Clash at Canyons tournament in Santa Clarita.

The Vaqueros trailed by one when Louks, a 6-2 freshman guard, converted a layup for a 65-64 lead with 39 seconds to play. Cid made a free throw with seven seconds left and Cuyamaca missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Cid, a 5-9 sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, also had three assists and three steals. Pablo Miranda and Rico Failla added 11 points apiece and Jalani Davis had seven points and six boards for the Vaqueros, who led 38-30 at halftime.

SBCC hit 6-17 from 3-point country in the opening half. The Vaqueros closed the first 20 minutes on a 16-8 run.

Santa Barbara was playing just 16 hours after a season-opening loss to Canyons.

“We played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We took better care of the ball. It was nice to get a win after a quick turnaround.”

SBCC shot just 30.8 percent (20-65) from the field but was sharp from the free-throw line (18-22).

The Vaqueros travel to the eight-team Fresno City Tournament on Thursday where they’ll open against Lassen at 8 p.m.
