No surprises on first day of AVP Championships



Friday’s Pool Play matches at the AVP Championships in Santa Barbara were straight chalk.

Each of the tournament’s top seeds won two matches moving into Saturday, a day that will end with the finalists decided for Sunday.

The final round of pool play will be played started at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Sean Scott and John Hyden, winners of the Cincinnati Open, won two matches. The morning match was a 21-15, 21-16 win over Billy Allen and Matt Prosser, followed by a 21-16, 23-21 victory over Braidy Halverson and Ty Loomis.

Santa Barbara’s hometown favorites Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser won both of their matches as well, taking out Stein Metzger and Mark Williams 21-17, 21-14 to begin the day. The 2008 Olympic Gold Medal winners then defeated Kevin McColloch and Mike Placek 21-16, 23-21.

In the Women’s Tournament, Pool A saw Cincinnati champions Jennifer Kesey and April Ross win two matches along with duo Brooke Niles and Tyra Turner.

Nicole Branagh and Kerri Walsh won their two matches in Pool B, defeating Morgan Beck and Priscilla Lima 21-9, 21-14 and Kristen Batt-Raquel Ferreira 21-12, 21-12.

Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat also won two matches on the day at West Beach.

The AVP’s event site features four courts, three outer community courts and a center court that is surrounded by a horse-shoe shaped stadium with a beach-top bar filling the open side.
