Cardinals crush Santa Maria in opener

Bishop Diego dominated Santa Maria on both sides of the ball on Friday, resulting in a 54-3 route in favor of the visiting Cardinals.

Jack Gregson totaled 264 yards rushing on only 13 carries and found the endzone three times on runs of 13, 13, and 71 yards. Sophomore Abel Gonzalez rushed five times for 87 yards and two more touchdowns.

The Bishop Diego defense was just as strong, forcing multiple turnovers and barely allowing the Saints to sniff Cardinal territory.

The game was so lopsided that the scoreboard read 34-0 after just one quarter.

It was quarterback Anthony Carter who started the scoring for the Cardinals with touchdown runs of four and 15 yards.

The only passing touchdown of the game came on a 76-yard TD pass from Gabe Molina to Nolan Tooley.

The Cardinals offense combined for 469 yards rushing while only making two passing attempts.

Bishop Diego (1-0), ranked No. 2 in the Northwest Division, plays its next game on Saturday at home vs. Santa Ynez.  Santa Maria (0-1) will travel to Marina for a Friday night game.
