Nick Scarvelis qualifies for Junior World Championships

It’s been a terrific two years for the shot-putting Scarvelis family of Goleta.

On Saturday, Nicholas Scarvelis, a 2011 Dos Pueblos grad and the 2011 CIF State Meet shot put champion, finished second at the U.S. Track and Field Association Junior Nationals in Bloomington, Ind. and qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain on July 10-15.

Scarvelis, who was red-shirted in his first year at UCLA, posted a mark of 63-6.75 and finished behind Cornell’s Stephen Mozia, who’s winning throw was 66-3.25.

A few weeks ago, Nicholas’ younger sister, Stamatia, a sophomore at DP, won the girls shot put title at the CIF State Championships.
