Warriors fall short in first round

The Carpinteria boys tennis team was unable to gain ground after going down early and lost 15-3 to Dunn in the first round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs.

Dunn took a 4-2 lead after the first round, but the Warriors were still very much in the match.

“We were in many of the games and many of the sets and it was not as one-sided as the final score would indicate,” coach Charles Bryant said. “But we would get a little tighter during the ‘big’ points and the unforced errors would mount up.”

Each of Carpinteria’s three doubles teams were able to earn a point, but the singles players were unable to get the advantage against their opponents.

This was the last match for seniors  Tim Goulart, Greg Norton, Matt Jansen and Johnny Blackwell.

“They will leave big holes that will be hard to fill,” Bryant said.

The doubles team of Justin Nathanson and Ben Murray will compete in the CIF Individuals tournament.

The game marks the end to a very successful season for Carpinteria, highlighted by their first Frontier League title in 20 years.

“They improved tremendously over the season and were a great group to coach,” Bryant concluded.
