Gorski, Aarons fall short at regional

Trevor Gorski shot a promising 74 in the opening round of the Southern Cal Regional men’s golf tournament on Monday but couldn’t keep it going at Glendora Country Club.

Gorski, one of two SBCC players competing as individuals, was in familiar surroundings as a graduate of Glendora High. The freshman eagled the 322-yard, par-4 eighth hole in the first round but shot 82 in the second round and finished at 12-over 156.

SBCC’s David Aarons, a sophomore from Santa Barbara High, shot 85 and 80 for a 36-hole total of 165. Gorski and Aarons both came up short in their bid to qualify to next Monday’s State Finals at Santa Maria CC.

“David hurt himself in practice on Saturday and he wasn’t his usual self,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez. “He got rehab on Sunday but you could tell it was bothering him. He didn‘t want to miss the Regional.

“Trevor was solid for the first 18 holes, then the weather got hot and he didn‘t fare as well.”

Malcolm Kokocinsky of College of the Desert was the medalist at 4-under 140 (72-68). WSC champion Canyons won the team competition at 2-over 722. Desert also qualified for State by shooting 734.
