Chargers on higher level at league championships

Dos Pueblos’ girls swim team racked up 410 points to win the Channel League Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday, with Santa Barbara coming in second with 247.

Two Dos Pueblos relay teams swam to Automatic CIF times, starting with the 200 IM relay team of Madison Faulkner, Maelyn Adornetto, Janelle Nguyen and Shannon Cleary posting a time of 1:51.52.

“Each girl had to swim exceptionaly well in order to get the time and they ended up swimming above and beyond to get well below the cut,” noted Chargers coach Kevin Kuga.

Laurel Kistler, Hailey Goodner, Cleary and Sarah Jamieson teamed up for the 200 freestyle relay and came through with an Automatic CIF time of 1:40.66.

Nguyen won two individual events in the 500 free and 100 fly. The 100 fly was especially lucrative for the Chargers as they swept the first four spots. Nguyen’s time of 56.95 is a season-best in the 100 fly.

Nguyen made it four wins on the day by winning the 400 relay with Cleary, Reagan Eickert and Sarah Jamieson.

For Santa Barbara, Kelsey O’Brien won the 50 free and 100 free. Sierra McNeel-Moore, in the 100 backstroke, and Maddie Trabucco, in the 100 breastroke, recorded third-place finishes for the Dons.

The top swimmers from Thursday’s final league meet will compete next at CIF Prelims in Riverside on Thursday.
