Dons finish strong for low round of 363

Santa Barbara High's Mickey Kirby watches his chip shot reach the cup on the 15th hole on Thursday.

Santa Barbara bettered San Marcos on Wednesday in a match with tri-medalists at Montecito Country Club.

San Marcos' Thayer White takes hits second shot onto the green on the par-four 15th.

The Dons’ Mickey Kirby and James Morton matched San Marcos’ Thayer White with rounds of one-over 72, as Santa Barbara took the Channel League match as a team 363-409.

Santa Barbara’s next three scorers were just one stroke back of the medalists. Sean Searls, Ryan Stoll and Jonathan Collins finished at two-over 73.

“All season, I have tried to explain that I am not sure who our number one player is,” said Dons head coach James Bedard. “This round shows exactly what I meant by that. Any one of these guys can be our number one.”

After White, San Marcos’ next four golfers were over 80.

“I thought the course played tougher than the scores showed as the greens were very quick,” Bedard said.

Kirby and Morton completed their rounds by going two-under par on the back nine.
