Santa Clara overcomes Hutchinson gem to top Warriors

Marcus Hutchinson took a no-hitter through six innings on Friday, but Santa Clara forced Carpinteria to absorb a 2-1 non-league loss in eight innings.

Hutchinson and the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. Santa Clara broke up the no-no with a softly hit single and would load the bases with no outs. Hutchinson pitched out of the jam while only allowing one run but Santa Clara came back with the winning run in the eighth.

Hutchinson, who recorded eight strikeouts on the mound, was also a plus at the plate for Carpinteria, recording two hits. Derrick Moore scored Carpinteria’s run in the first inning on a RBI single by Diego Martinez.

Carpinteria’s next game comes next Tuesday with a non-league matchup against Thacher. That game was originally scheduled for Wednesday.
