Cate begins CIF SoCal Regional on Monday

Cate’s boys soccer team, fresh off a 4-1 victory on Saturday in the CIF Southern Section’s Division 7 championship game, begins competition in the CIF SoCal Regional Tournament as the top seed in Division 3 on Monday against Fulton.

The two-time defending sectional champion Rams, who did not play in the Regional Tournament last season, host the L.A. City Section school at 4 p.m. at San Marcos High School.

The Division-3 SoCal Regional bracket is made up of schools with enrollment of less than a thousand students, and features four teams from the Southern Section, two teams from San Diego, one from L.A. Section, and one from the Central Section.

The Fulton Jaguars (14-4-2) lost to Sun Valley in their sectional championship game. Before that, Fulton was riding a 13-match unbeaten streak. Not counting forfeit wins, Cate (19-1-1) has its own 16-game unbeaten streak intact.

The Division 3 bracket includes three teams – Cate, University Prep, and Paraclete – that competed in the Southern Section’s Division 7. The Central Section’s McFarland is the second seed while San Diego section teams Pacific Ridge and Francis Parker are the third and fourth seed respectively.

The winner between Cate and Fulton would face the first-round survivor of Francis Parker and Santa Monica’s Crossroads on Wednesday.

Unlike the sectional playoffs, the home team in Round 1 and the semifinals is determined by higher seed. The championship will be played at Warren High School on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
