All-Academic CIF teams heavy with local schools

Sports teams from San Marcos, Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos received All-Academic CIF distinctions from the Southern Section, it was announced this week.

In total, Dos Pueblos was named six times, San Marcos twice and Santa Barbara High once. That means local schools took 9 of the 22 first-place opportunities amongst schools with enrollments larger than 1500. The teams with the highest collective GPA in each sport receive the award.

To be considered, teams must have a minimum 3.0 GPA average (4.0 scale) in college-prep courses in the first semester of the 2011-12 school year. The Southern Section had 1323 entries to choose from.

The winning teams will be honored at Angels Stadium in a pre-game ceremony on May 1st.

For the Chargers, it was boys water polo, boys swimming, girls soccer, boys golf, softball and boys track & field. San Marcos’ girls track & field and boys basketball teams were honored. Santa Barbara High’s boys volleyball team also was awarded.

Dos Pueblos’ Michael Yi and Rachel Suding were singled out as Dos Pueblos’ top individual student-athletes.

San Marcos’ Garrett Hazarian and Kaylin Koopmans were the Royals’ top scholars who competed in varsity competition.

For Santa Barbara High, it was boys basketball and boys volleyball player Sam Cohen, along with girls tennis player Emily Baum.
