Royals’ playoff run ends in penalty kicks

After a successful Channel League season, the San Marcos boys soccer team faced a tough difficult with Los Alamitos and lost 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout.

Regulation time ended in a 0-0 tie, with neither team able to crack the other’s defense.

Both overtime periods were played to scoreless draw as well, leaving the result to be decided through penalty kicks.

Los Al was able to edge out the Royals in a pressure-packed finish and advance to the next round.

The Royals finished the regular season with a 9-6-5 record and earned second place in league. Los Alamitos hosted the first-round match and entered the CIF Division I playoffs with a 15-6-4 record, finishing second in the Sunset League.

Despite the playoff loss, San Marcos enjoyed a successful season which featured excellent team defense and a signature league win over Santa Barbara. Underclassmen standouts Justin Vom Steeg and Sam Strong will both return next season, giving the Royals plenty to look forward to.
