Dons, Chargers, Royals at home for CIF water polo openers

Channel League co-champions Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos drew first-round home matches for the first round of the CIF Division 1 girls water polo playoffs.

CIF PAIRINGS

Santa Barbara (20-7), which won a coin-flip to be the league’s No. 1 team for the playoffs, will play Wednesday against the winner of the wild-card match between Edison and Peninsula. If the Dons win, they could face third-seeded Laguna Beach on Saturday.

Dos Pueblos (16-11), the four-time defending CIF champion, will host Mira Costa, the Bay League co-champion (21-8-1), in a first-round match on Wednesday. The winner would more than likely get a shot at top-seeded Corona del Mar in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Corona del Mar ended DP’s 68-game winning streak back in December.

San Marcos (15-15), the third-place team from the Channel League, will host a wild-card match on Tuesday against Godinez (14-10), the Orange Coast League’s No. 3 team. The winner draws fourth-seeded Foothill.

In Division 6, Tri-Valley League champion Carpinteria (15-6) got a tough playoff opener. After a first-round bye, the Warriors travel to third-seeded Pasadena Poly (20-2) on Thursday.

All playoff matches begin at 5 p.m. with a few exceptions. Dos Pueblos’ match on Wednesday has been changed to 6 p.m.
