The Carpinteria boys basketball fought through until the end, but was unable to pull out a victory and lost 50-47 to Hueneme at home.
No team was able to establish a clear advantage throughout the night and 15 points from Andrew Sova kept the Warriors in the game through all four quarters.
Marcus Hutchinson added 10 points, and Jeffrey Moorhouse led Carpinteria with seven rebounds.
Carpinteria was outmatched on the inside due to Hueneme’s size advantage, and allowed several offensive rebound and second chance points. Despite the disadvantage in the paint, the Warriors were never intimidated.
“We’re an undersized team but we play bigger than we are,” Carpinteria head coach Johnny Ward said.
The Warriors led 40-35 heading into the fourth quarter, but Hueneme started final period by hitting two miraculous shots on its first two offensive possessions.
First the Vikings’ center hit a 3-point shot, and then put up a shot that hit the backboard twice before finding its way through the net to tie the game.
With luck seemingly on its side, Hueneme was able to squeak past the Warriors.
“Losing by three to a very good Hueneme team gives us a lot of positives,” Ward said.
Carpinteria (0-1) continues its season at Cate on Tuesday.
