Cate teams qualify for CIF cross country prelims

Cate’s girls finished second and the boys took third at the Condor League Cross Country Championships at Midland in Los Olivos on Wednesday.

Thacher swept the team titles.

Senior co-captain Adrian Walsh led the Cate girls with a strong sixth-place finish, covering the 3-mile course in 20:57 on a hot day. Fellow seniors and captains Denali Tietjen (13th, 21:20) and Charlotte Bowles (14th, 21:21) weren’t far behind and were the key to a strong finish for the Rams.

Junior Grace Dickman had another good race, finishing 17th in 23:00, and sophomore Luisa Ilvento, who has been injured most of the season, returned with an 18th place in 23:17.

In the boys’ race, the freshman/senior duo of Jeff Acheampong and Bill Pomeransl led Cate to third.  Acheampong medaled with a 10th-place finish in 18:09, with Pomeransl (11th, 18:23) right behind him.  Sophomores Andrew Robbins (14th, 18:34) and Andrew Sinclair (15th, 18:35) made up the middle of the Cate pack, while freshman Daniel Yeom rounded out the Cate scoring with a 19:40 clocking for 31st place.

Both Cate teams qualified for the first round of the Division 5 Southern Section Championships at Mt SAC on Nov. 12.
