The Carpinteria High boys soccer team took a 1-0 lead against Buena in the 38th minute of its season opener, but was unable to hold on to its lead and allowed two second-half goals to Buena’s Nicolas Guzman.
Junior Omar Vazquez scored the lone goal for the Warriors. Guzman’s goals came in the 60th and 70th minutes respectively.
“My expectations aren’t the highest this year because we have so many new players on the team and so many young players,” Carpinteria head coach Daniel Torres said. “I’m expecting the boys to get better as the season goes on.”
Despite the loss, Torres was pleased with the performances of the inexperienced players on his team.
“I was very happy with underclassman, especially the guys who hadn’t played in a varsity game before,” Torres said. “[Sophomore right back] Jesus Ortega did a phenomenal job. He looked like he’d been playing varsity for the last two years.
The Warriors (0-1) play at home against Pacific on Thursday.
