Warriors suffer first GSAC loss

Westmont Men’s Soccer (2-6-1, 1-1-1) suffered a 2-1 Golden State Athletic Conference loss at the hand of No. 11 Concordia (9-1, 3-0) on Saturday at Russ Carr Field. The Warriors went down 2-0 in the first half and could not find a way to even the score.

“It is probably mixed for me,” said Westmont head coach Dave Wolf regarding his thoughts about the game. “I am disappointed with the result. Going behind made it hard for us. It is a long way back against a good team, with just one day of rest between games.”

Due to a rainout on Wednesday, the Warriors took on The Master’s College on Thursday, a game which produced a scoreless, two-overtime tie.”

“On the other hand, I thought that at times we played some of our best soccer,” said Wolf. “The starting point of getting better over the last few weeks was eliminating the bad goal. Step two was to get more solid defensively. Step three was to see if we could generate more attack. The second half of today’s game was indicative of how we have defended the last few games. Unfortunately, the big mistake reared its head again.”

Both of the goals scored by Concordia in the first half were the result of the ball rebounding off of the Westmont goalkeeper. The first was put in by Edgar Orozco in the twenty-sixth minute, the second by William Prado in the thirty-fourth minute.

Five minutes into the second half, the Warriors pulled to within one on a goal by senior Doug Harrell, his third of the season. Nana Akyen passed the ball ahead to Harrell. Harrell, out in front of the defenders, dribbled down the center of the field and fired away to beat the keeper.

While the Warriors would hold the Eagles scoreless in the second half, they were unable to find the equalizer.

Westmont returns to action on Tuesday when the Warriors travel to #5 Azusa Pacific (7-2-1, 1-1-10 for a three o’clock game.
