SBCC women stunned in stoppage time

Katherine Rollins scored a fast-break goal from 12 yards in stoppage time on Thursday night to help Cuyamaca hand SBCC a rare 2-1 home loss in women’s soccer.

Santa Barbara, ranked No. 2 in Southern Cal and No. 6 in the nation, fell to 9-2. It was just the second loss in the last 16 home games for the Vaqueros, who are 13-2-1 in La Playa Stadium since November, 2009.

Cuyamaca, of El Cajon, is ranked No. 7 in Southern Cal with a 7-0-4 record. They’re one of three unbeaten teams in California.

Jo Lawlor put the Vaqueros  ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute with her first goal of the year. She lobbed a free kick from 40 yards that went over teammate Brittany Brennhofer’s head and bounced past the keeper.

Laura Kohl tied the nonconference game with a shot from 25 yards in the 60th minute. Kohl assisted on Rollins’ game-winner with a long lead pass up the right side.

“We told the girls they were going to be in a battle at halftime,” said coach John Sisterson. “I felt we should have been up 3-0 at the break. We didn’t finish our chances.”

Katie Voss drilled a header just wide in the 42nd minute and Jessica Domenichelli barely missed to the right after Cuyamaca went ahead. The Vaqueros outshot the visitors 15-13. Each team had nine shots on goal.

“We didn’t compete and we didn’t deserve the win,” Sisterson added. “I don’t know why they switched off and started to do their own thing.”
