Last Friday’s weather-suspended football game between Carpinteria and Santa Ynez will go in the record book as a victory for Santa Ynez, based on a CIF rule.
Santa Ynez was leading 21-0 at halftime of the non-league game at Carpinteria when a thunderstorm rumbled through the area. After a lengthy delay to wait out the storm, the game was suspended after 10 p.m.
Carpinteria Athletic Director Pat Cooney said Wednesday the CIF applied a rule it has for interrupted games for the playoffs, where a completed half of a game counts as an official game.
“Though there is no specific rule for regular season games, we applied that to our game in the end,” Cooney said in an email. “So, Santa Ynez gets a win and Carpinteria takes a loss.”
It was Carpinteria’s first loss of the season. The Warriors will take a 2-1 record into their home game on Friday against Santa Clara.
Santa Ynez is also 2-1.
