Santa Barbara’s Walker Bell finished 15th overall out of more than 300 swimmers in the La Jolla Rough Water Gatorman 3-mile ocean swim on Sunday.
The 14-year-old Dos Pueblos freshman finished in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 32 seconds. He was the youngest male competitors in the event.
Bell’s 13-18 age group dominated the event, taking eight of the top 10 places. Bell, who won 11 Nite Moves 1k ocean swims this summer, finished seventh in the division.
The race winner was Alex Kostich, 41, of Los Angeles in 58:21. He’s been a multi-winner of Semana Nautica swims in Santa Barbara. Jamey Lyon, 16, finished second in 59:12 and David Heron, 16, of Mission Viejo was third in 1:00.59.
Santa Barbaran Jerry Mahoney, 49, was 12th in 1:06.14.
