UCSB’s Opoku earns a pair of national honors

UCSB sophomore forward David Opoku has garnered local and national accolades after his two-goal performance in last Saturday’s season-opening win over Seattle. The forward was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Team of the Week, the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and was selected as the UCSBgauchos.com Gaucho of the Week.

Opoku scored twice to lead UCSB to its 3-1 win over the Redhawks. He scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute to give UCSB the early lead. He then tagged on his second goal 30 minutes later to stretch the Gaucho advantage to 2-0. The sophomore also led the team in shots (7) and shots on goal (3).

The national teams of the week accolades are Opoku’s first from College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.

Opoku and the rest of the Gauchos will hit the road this week to travel to the Duke/Nike Classic in Durham, North Carolina. UCSB will face host Duke on Friday, Sept. 2 and then NC State on Sunday, Sept. 4.
