Hesselmeyer service will be private; public memorial being planned

A private service for local high school football coach and teacher Jeff Hesselmeyer is scheduled this weekend at Santa Barbara Cemetary.

A public memorial service is planned in the next two weeks, said San Marcos athletic director Abe Jahadhmy. Details are still be worked out.

Hesselmeyer, 59, was found dead in his home on July 23.

Hesselmeyer was entering his third year as head football coach at San Marcos. He spent 25 years as an assistant and head coach at Dos Pueblos.

Jadhadhmy said he was so impressed with the experience, knowledge and professionalism “Coach Hess” brought to San Marcos

“The influence he had our coaches was unreal,” Jahadhmy said. “That meant a lot to me.”

Dos Pueblos athletic director Dan Feldhaus said Hesselmeyer’s influence is still felt in the Chargers program

Most of the football coaching staff at DP played under Hesselmeyer, including head coach Jeff Uyesaka and Feldhaus.

Jahadhmy suggested a trophy in Hesselmeyer’s name be awarded to the MVP of the Dos Pueblos-San Marcos football game.
