Six-team passing, lineman competition at Bishop Diego

Bishop Diego’s football team  is hosting a passing league tournament and lineman competition on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

The Cardinals will be joined by local schools Dos Pueblos and San Marcos, along with Pioneer Valley, Mission Prep and Leuzinger.

“Each team will be guaranteed at least four games during the course of the day and we’ll have two games going on at the same time, with two teams sitting out and then rotating in,” said Bishop Diego coach Tom Crawford.

Crawford said because it’s early in the summer and the coaches are focusing on repetitions and teahing, they will decide the format for each game that works for them.

“Typically, teams will use a format of something like three downs to gain 15 yards with four downs if you get inside the 10-yard line (fields will be 40 yards long),” he said.

The lineman’s challenge starts at 10. The competition includes strength events (like maximum reps of bench press at 185 pounds and power clean), agility events for time, and team competitions like obstacle courses and tire flips.

“The idea is to give the big guys a chance to have fun and compete,” said Crawford.

Bishop is also inviting the schools to bring their frosh/soph linemen to participate.

“The idea, of course, is participation and team building,” he said. “Events like these break up the monotony of the hard work in the summer and allow kids to work toward something. It should be fun.”

The Bishop Diego booster organization, the Cardinal Club, will be barbecuing tri-tip and serving drinks and snacks.

“We expect the schools will bring lots of hungry fans, as well as players,” Crawford cracked. “Believe me, I’ve seen the damage these young guys can do to the snack shack inventories, so we’ll be prepared.”
