Scarvelis beats “Sam Bam’s” record at Ventura Invitational

Nicholas Scarvelis broke a 42-year-old stadium record in the shot put with a heave of 60-11 at the Ventura Invitational track and field meet on Saturday.

The UCLA-bound Scarvelis beat the Larrabee Stadium mark of 60-7.5 set by Santa Barbara’s Sam Cunningham in 1969. He holds the top mark in the state at 61-6, which he threw last week at the Green Invitational in Simi Valley.

Scarvelis also won the discus in Ventura with a mark of 171-10.

His younger sister, Stamatia, set the freshman meet record in the shot put at 37-4.

On the track, DP’s distance medley relay team of Bryan Fernandez, Cy Torres, Jacob Bartholomew and Sergey Sushchikh clocked a winning time of 10:39.2, sixth fastest in the state. Sushchikh, who also has committed to UCLA, ran a one-mile anchor leg in 4:26.

Dos Pueblos’ boys finished third in the team competition behind Ventura and Rio Mesa.
