San Marcos sets relay record; Scarvelis, Rowan breeze at Easter Relays

Nick Scarvelis, Alex Morgan, Shane Rowan, Vinnie Saucier and the San Marcos girls 4×400 relay team lived up to their top billing Saturday at the 73rd annual Easter Relays track and field meet at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium.

The four individuals and the relay quartet shined on a cold, cloudy day.

The Royals’ relay team turned in the perfomance of the day, setting a meet record with time of 3:55.03. That bested the previous mark of 3:55.98, set last year by St. Mary’s Academy. The quartet of Hannah McDaniel, Elysia Hodges, Marie Brashears and Kaylin Koopmans beat St. Mary’s and Oaks Christian in its heat to set the record.

San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin encouraged her girls to go for the record.

“The girls are in shape and working hard in practice, why not try for it?” she said. “I tried to convince them. Luckily, they took the challenge.”

Hantgin said the time is the third fastest in the state this year.

“Hopefully, we can continue getting better,” she said. “This is a special group, and they did a great job today.”

Saucer burned up the track. The Oaks Christian speedster repeated as champion in the 100 meters in a time of 10.69 and he ran a sizzling second leg on the Lions’ 4×100 relay to help his team win in 42.46.

“He’s probably the fastest kid on our team,” said Terry Johnson, who ran the anchor leg.

The other members of the Oaks Christian squad are Ronnie Camacho (first leg), and Ismael Adams (third leg).

San Marcos runners make a baton change during a race at the Easter Relays.

“I’m glad they’re running. As long as I hold it, it’s good. I help them and they help me,” said Johnson.

Scarvelis, Morgan and Rowan dominated in the field events

Scarvelis, the No. 1 shot putter in the state from Dos Pueblos, easily won his specialty with a mark of 62-4.5.

“I had three throws all around the same area and they all felt pretty strong,” he said.

He admitted being a bit disappointed in not being able to break Noah Bryant’s meet record of 64 feet.

“I felt like I was chasing someone else’s mark at a real meet,” Scarvelis said. “At an intrasquad meet I threw 64-3 1/2, so after that I knew I was in range. But I just couldn’t put it together today.”

Nathan Wolitarsky of St. Joseph finished a distant second at 52-10.5

The UCLA-bound Scarvelis later captured the discus with a throw of 171-02. His DP teammate James Lagattuta finished second at 140-0.

Like Scarvelis in the boys throwing events, Ventura’s Alex Morgan dominated in the girls discus and shot put.

Morgan raised her state-best mark in the discus with a throw of 153-01. She won the shot with a mark of 41-0.

“I felt like I was in a really good rhythm,” said Morgan of her discus throws.

She said she’s improving her marks in each meet and is building toward reaching her PR of 166-2.

As for a goal this season, “I like to go over 180,” she said. “I know I can do it. I’ve done it in training. I just have to get in the mindset to do it in competition.”

San Marcos’ Rowan set a season PR in the triple jump at 45-2.5. He put together a good sequence of jumps in the finals (44-4 2/3, 45-2.5, 43-7.5 and 42-4), all of which were better than the second-place finisher.

In other meet highlights, Oaks Christian’s 4×100 relay “A” team of Abby King, Danni Alakja, Asha Culhane and Ally Courtnall held off a good St. Mary’s Academy team, 49.12 to 49.27.

Santa Maria’s Steven De Comarmond won the 110 high hurdles in 14.77.

Centennial’s Nick Hartle looked strong in winning the boys 1500 meters in 4:00.56.

Dos Pueblos freshman Stamatia Scarvelis set the frosh/soph record in the girls shot put with a throw of 38 feet. The previous mark was 36-11, set in 2004.

Comments

  1. Wow–great performance of San Marcos Girls 4×800–best in 73 years!!!

  2. It was actually the 4×400 team that ran for the record. Not mentioned in the article though was that their 4×800 team was also victorious. The San Marcos Girls had a good day indeed!
