No. 7 Warriors edge No. 9 Eagles

Westmont's Bryan Cox won his singles match and combined with Carlos Lima to also win in doubles.

Westmont’s men’s tennis team took a key Golden State Athletic Conference victory on Saturday, winning two-of-three doubles sets over Concordia to clinch a 5-4 decision at the Abbott Tennis Courts.

The No. 7 Warriors even their GSAC record at 3-3 while the No. 9 Eagles fall to 2-4. Westmont moves into fourth place in the standings, two games behind fourth-ranked Azusa Pacific, which is 5-1 in GSAC play. Atop the standings is #1 Fresno Pacific at 5-0 with #6 Point Loma Nazarene in second and 4-0. Westmont is a game ahead of both Concordia and #13 Vanguard.

The two schools split the singles matches before the Warriors prevailed thanks to their doubles play. Carlos Lima and Bryan Cox combined to defeat Concordia’s Andrey Potapkin and Kareem Berdai 8-2. Tiago Hayashi and Kent Stormans partnered to take their doubles point 8-2 as well, while Concordia’s Bruno Santarelli and Jan Guler kept the match going by edging Westmont’s Lukas Zielen and Tim Goranson, 9-8 (11-9).
