Breakers open WCBL season with tribute to Ward

The Santa Barbara Breakers will honor and celebrate local Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director John Ward who died of cancer last September in their WCBL opener this Saturday.

The Breakers will play the season opener at Carpinteria High School where Coach Ward was successful not only on the hardwood floor but in the hearts of so many friends, fans, students, local residents and his family. The game will tip off at 4 p.m. with halftime being dedicated for family and friends to share their thoughts and memories about Coach Ward over the public address system.

“John Ward touched so many lives both in the athletic circle and out. TheBreakers are dedicating the 2011 to Coach Ward and his children”, stated Breakers President Curt Pickering.

The Breakers (8-1 in non-WCBL League play) will host the West LA Advantage (7-3), a member of the West Coast Professional Basketball League. The gamewill be the first professional basketball game at the Warrior’s Gymnasium since the CBA Santa Barbara Islander’s played their first exhibition game there,November 5, 1989. The Islanders were successful, winning 123-116 over the High Five America Professional traveling team.
