Alfaro, Spivey are CIF Division 1 first-team selections

Tony Alfaro helped the Dons post 20 shutouts and win a CIF State Regional title.

Santa Barbara midfielder Sanford Spivey and defender Tony Alfaro, the leaders behind the Dons’ run to the CIF-SS Division 1 final and a State Regional championship, were selected to the All-CIF Division 1 first team.

Spivey initially was the team’s ball-winner in the midfield. But he became a primary goal scorer during the postseason. Nine of his 11 goals were scored in the playoffs, including a hat trick in the first round and a golden goal in a double-overtime second-round win at Los Alamitos. The Boston University-bound player also scored in the Division 1 finals loss to San Clemente and tallied two goals in the Regional title victory over Oak Hills.

Alfaro headed a Santa Barbara’s backline that allowed only 20 goals in 31 games and recorded 20 shutouts. He also came up with some big goals, none bigger than his 50-yard free kick in the final seconds of the second overtime to beat JSerra in the quarterfinals. He finished with eight goals and five assists.

Three other Dons were honored. Junior forward Alfredo Ibarra and senior midfielder Tyler Schleich were named second-team All-CIF and senior defender Spencer Pritchard was picked to the third team.

San Clemente defender Kevin Gould was named the division’s Player of the Year and Michael Pronier was honored as Coach of the Year. Pronier coached the Tritons to their first CIF title.

The Southern California High School Soccer Coaches Association picked the teams.
