SBCC freshman Matt Boberg shot his second straight 74 on Tuesday in the final round of the Bakersfield Invitational at Rio Bravo CC and finished fifth in the 60-player field. The Vaqueros shot 394 for a 781 total that earned them fifth in the 10-team, season-opening men’s golf tournament.

Canyons took a three-stroke lead into the second day of the 36-hole tourney and then used a 368 for a 738 total (73.8 average) that left the Cougars 19 strokes ahead of Ventura (757). Reedley was third at 764.

Dodge Ward shot 78 for SBCC for a two-day total of 148. Reese Hutchins (79-79) finished at 158 and Erik Price (82-77) turned in a 159.

“We didn’t play quite as well as we did in the first round,“ said coach Chuck Melendez. “This is a young group and we’re gaining experience.”

The Vaqueros will play in WSC No. 1 on Monday at Valencia CC.
