Warriors tame Sea Lions in the second half

Westmont held the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene to just 17 second-half points on Saturday night to claim a 60-45 win in a Golden State Athletic Conference match-up.

It was the third win in a row for the No. 22 Warriors (15-5, 7-5 GSAC) over the Sea Lions (9-10, 4-7), with two of those wins coming on the road.

Westmont led 22-15 with 5:28 to play in the first half and then went stone cold. The Sea Lions closed the half on a 13-0 run to take a 28-22 win into the locker room. But Westmont caught fire in the second half. Elizabeth Evancoe (8 points, 5 rebounds) hit a three-point bucket to start the second frame and kick off a 6-0 run that tied the game at 28-all. Westmont went on to outscore the Sea Lions 38-17 in the second half.

“We took care of the basketball and rebounded really well in the second half,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “Offensively, we executed and got the ball inside. Our first half turnovers were the reason why we struggled early. We had 15 turnovers in the first half and only three in the second half. So our halftime talk focused on taking care of the ball and giving ourselves opportunities. We also focused on getting o-boards and giving ourselves opportunities.”

Angel Blanco led the Warriors in both scoring and rebounding with 15 points and nine rebounds.
