Cal Poly’s Burns sends Gauchos to another slim defeat

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Ashlee Burns' three-point play with 2.3 seconds left gave Cal Poly a stunning 61-58 victory over UCSB on Saturday night, finishing off the Gauchos' 2011 with a bitter taste in their mouths.UCSB has now dropped its past three games by a combined six points and lost its conference opener for just the second time in the last 17 seasons. Warriors capture fifth straight Tom Byron championship

Westmont earned its fifth Tom Byron Classic title in a row on Friday night at Murchison Gymnasium with a 95-57 win over UC Merced (1-5) in the championship game.The game was much closer than the final score indicated. With 8:36 remaining in regulation, the Bobcats had narrowed the margin to just 11 points (57-46). Dons best Chargers at Buena Tournament

Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara met at the Buena Tournament for the second year in a row on Friday, with the Dons getting the better go of it with a 1-0 result.Both teams won games earlier in the day to advance to the 5th place game. Last year, Santa Barbara triumphed in a shootout to take home the tournament title.Alfredo Ibarra's second goal of the day and sixth on the season ended up the game winner. Nico Sorenson and Chad Lampe placed at the North Torrance Tournament of Champions, held at Artesia High School.The Dos Pueblos wrestlers both competed in the 120-pound weight class, where they finished fourth and fifth, respectively.It's the last tournament before the Chargers' first Channel League dual meet on Tuesday against Santa Barbara High. Warriors win to reach Tom Byron championship

With a new starting line-up in his game plan, Westmont head coach John Moore brought the Warrior into Murchison Gymnasium to begin play in the 36th Annual Tom Byron Classic. Day one is the books for the 2011 GSAC Classic with the Golden State Athletic Conference teams winning both games. In the early game San Diego Christian (11-2) defeated Cal State Maritime (6-8) by a score of 84-69. Ocean View made Thursday's championship game of the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic by outscoring its opponents by the average margin of 15 points.Earlier on Thursday, two of the teams that the Sea Hawks beat won by twice the amount than Santa Barbara High did against the same opponent.Still, the Dons were right there with Ocean View on Thursday before falling 61-57 in the championship game of their annual tournament in J.R. Oak Park’s 4th quarter leaves DP behind

A sluggish first half gave way to high-scoring second one in a 53-39 victory for Oak Park over Dos Pueblos at the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament on Thursday.The score read 16-11 at halftime, with neither team able to score more than 10 points in a quarter.But then it opened up in the later two periods, with Oak Park finding a higher gear.
