Warriors fight off Vanguard comeback

Westmont Volleyball (13-13, 7-10 GSAC) won the first two sets and then held on to take a five-set victory over Vanguard (13-13, 5-12) on Tuesday night in Vanguard. In each set except the last, one team or the other made a significant comeback.

Alison Sharp led the way for the Warriors with 17 kills while Tessa Martin and Kayta Goyich added another 12 kills each. The win was the third in a row for the Warriors.

The Warriors jumped out to a 15-8 lead game one, but the Lions stormed back to tie the game at 23. After a timeout called by Westmont head coach Jim Smoot, Alison Sharp produced two kills to give Westmont at 25-23 win.

In the second set, it was Vanguard who posted an early 12-6 lead before Westmont scored 10 of the next 14 points to produce a 16-16 tie. The Lions scored the next two points before Westmont went on a 9-4 run to go up two sets to none with a 25-22 win in the second set.

In the third set Westmont held a 16-12 lead, but ultimately surrendered the set 25-22. Similarly, the Warriors were up 12-5 in the fourth set, but the Lions evened the match at two sets each by posting a 25-20 win.

Not until the fifth set did the Warriors finally take a lead and retain it for the win. With the set tied at one, The Warriors went on a 5-1 run with kills from Sharp, Candace Adema and Marie Trudelle. Adema also added a service ace. Vanguard closed within two points at 4-6 and again at 6-8, but from that point on, Westmont scored twice for every point scored by the Lions, closing out the set with a 15-9 win.
