Gauchos upset fourth-ranked Stanford

Brian Shoemaker scored three goals to lead UCSB’s water polo team to an upset of fourth-ranked Stanford at the SoCal Tournament on Saturday at UCLA.

The Gauchos’ 12-10 victory was their first over the Cardinal in two years. Their last win was Nov. 8, 2008.

Milos Golic scored twice against Stanford. He is now only four goals away from surpassing the 27-year old school record for career goals, which is held by Larry Mouchawar (1980-83), who recorded 244.

Stanford took the early 3-2 lead, but the momentum shifted and UCSB came back strong in the second quarter by posting six goals.

Brian Bishop and Dylan Baliani both scored twice, while Noah Smith, Zsombor Vincze and Lazar Komadinic all posted a goal in the game. Fraser Bunn had a strong outing in the cage, recording nine saves against the Cardinals.

Earlier, the Gauchos beat Concordia 19-10.

Sam Evans stepped up for the Gauchos and recorded three goals. Ryan Flint, Vincze, Shoemaker and Smith recorded two goals each. Shoemaker is a former Dos Pueblos High star.

Fraser Bunn led the Gauchos with four saves in the game.
