Santa Barbara drops first golf match of the season

Montecito Country Club is Santa Barbara High’s home course, but there at times when it isn’t much of an advantage for the home team.

That was the case on Thursday as the Dons suffered their first loss of the season, falling three shots behind Oxnard in a three-way nonleague match. The Yellowjackets, behind medalist Drew Thomas’ 4-over par 40, scored 244 to Santa Barbara’s 247, and Oak Christian’s 265.

“The girls have a challenging time at Montecito,” coach Ryan Throop said. “It can be quirky for them.”

Kyle Wagner led the Dons (5-1) with a 44 and Haley True shot 47.

“Every team after they get off the course say it’s their highest score of the year,” Throop said of Montecito Country Club. “It’s the type of grass, and the greens are pretty quick, they’re slanted in parts, which makes it a challenging putting course.”

The Dons will get another shot at Oxnard on Monday when they play at River Ridge Golf Course.
