Valaika nabs base hit in MLB debut
Former UCSB baseball star Chris Valaika made his Major League debut for the Cincinnati Reds in San Francisco on Tuesday, going 1-for-2 with a single to center field on the very first pitch he saw from Giants pitcher Santiago Casilla.Valaika, a 2006 third-round draft pick by the Reds, was the organization's Minor League Player of the Year in 2008. Competing in only its second tournament since workouts began last month, the G-Land club baseball team took home the first place trophy from a tourney held this weekend at Girsh Fields in Goleta.G-Land squared off on its home field against other 14U teams from Oxnard, Santa Maria and Tehachapi. San Marcos High senior Ghazaleh Sailors brought back a bronze medal from the International Baseball Federation Women’s World Cup in Venezuela.The United States defeated host Venezuela, 15-5, in the bronze-medal game on Sunday.
