Jerry Mahoney, 43, completed Tuesday night's one-mile swim in 21 minutes, 21 seconds, beating his nearest Reef and Run competitor by over two minutes. Valaika nabs base hit in MLB debut

Former UCSB baseball star Chris Valaika made his Major League debut for the Cincinnati Reds in San Francisco on Tuesday, going 1-for-2 with a single to center field on the very first pitch he saw from Giants pitcher Santiago Casilla.Valaika, a 2006 third-round draft pick by the Reds, was the organization's Minor League Player of the Year in 2008. Competing in only its second tournament since workouts began last month, the G-Land club baseball team took home the first place trophy from a tourney held this weekend at Girsh Fields in Goleta.G-Land squared off on its home field against other 14U teams from Oxnard, Santa Maria and Tehachapi. San Marcos High senior Ghazaleh Sailors brought back a bronze medal from the International Baseball Federation Women’s World Cup in Venezuela.The United States defeated host Venezuela, 15-5, in the bronze-medal game on Sunday. Erica Seidman, who scored game-winning goals in UCSB’s season-opening matches over the weekend, has been named the first Big West Offensive Player of the Week.Seidman, a senior midfielder who had scored only one goal in her UCSB career, scored early in the first half of a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge on Friday. The Santa Barbara Soccer Club captured six division championships at its annual Summer Cup tournament over the weekend.In all, the club had 17 teams reach the finals out of 29 flights. In some age groups, there were enough teams entered to form two flights — Anacapa and Santa Cruz.The boys championship teams were the Under-16s in the Anacapa Flight, the U14s, and the U10 White squad.
