BERKELEY – The UCSB women’s volleyball team dropped its first match of the season, falling 25-18, 25-15, 28-26 to No. 11 Cal on Friday night. The defeat marked the first time the Gauchos dropped their season opener since the 2007 campaign.UCSB, which is receiving votes in the preseason AVCA Top-25 poll, was facing its highest-ranked opponent since matching up with No. 7 Stanford in 2008. The AYSO season is starting up and the UCSB soccer teams are doing their part to get the players and coaches prepared.UCSB men’s and women’s teams will be on hand Saturday at Girsh Park for AYSO Skills Day. Camarillo pair go 1-2 in Nite Moves aquathon

In what for many was the last tune-up before this weekend’s Santa Barbara Triathlon, Camarillo’s Jim Avrea and Norbert Hoehne and local Jim Shalhoub were the event winners at Wednesday’s Nite Moves at Leadbetter Beach.Avrea beat out Hoehne by 31 seconds in the swim-run aquathon. Avrea did the 1-k swim and 5-k run in 37 minutes, 12 seconds. Hoehne crossed the finish line in 37:43.
