Scarvelis, Fernandez net top-10 finishes at JOs

Nick Scarvelis finished ninth in the shot put and Bryan Fernandez placed eighth in the 3000m at the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics on Thursday in Sacramento.

Scarvelis competing in the Young Men’s Division with many of the top 17- to 18-year-old throwers in the country, had a best mark of 56 feet, 1/2 inch with the 12-pound shot.

The winning throw was 62-1 by Ben Glauser, the Georgia state high school champion. Jermaine Kline, the state prep champion from Illinois, was second at 61-5 1/2, and Joshua McClure, the California Junior College runner-up from Moorpark College, finished third with a mark of 60-11 1/4.

Fernandez, 15, was eighth in the Intermediate Boys 3000m with a time of 9:13.06.

Scarvelis, 17, and Fernandez are track & field teammates at Dos Pueblos High. Scarvelis, competing for Santa Barbara Club West, will also compete in the discus on Saturday.

Also entered in the Junior Olympics are Club West athletes Amber Belletti in the bantam girls shot put and Sophia Hope in the bantam girls high jump.
