Alcatraz attracts several local endurance athletes
Santa Barbara's Jason Kelly, Mark Silverberg, Jim Murdoch and Greg Gaitan took on the Alcatraz Challenge on July 18, braving the chilly and choppy San Francisco Bay to compete in the famous endurance competition.Kelly and Silverberg completed the aquathlon (with wetsuits) right after the other, with Kelly edging Silverberg by a single second. John Brennand was the third American finisher and fourth overall in the 70-74 age division 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the USA Track and Field Masters National Championships in Sacramento.Brennand, 74, representing the Santa Barbara Athletic Association, ran 23 minutes, 3.25 seconds in the 5,000.
