Royals roll into postseason with win

San Marcos’ boys volleyball team locked in a playoff spot on Thursday, and in the process locked Ventura out with a 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17 Channel League victory.

“This was the one we needed,” said Royals head coach Roger Kuntz, whose team finishes its regular season with a 4-4 record in league, 13-9 overall.

The Royals now wait to learn their first-round playoff opponent when the pairings are announced on Sunday.

San Marcos’ attack was powered by Zach Yinger’s 15 kills and Johnny Manzo’s 14 while the net was controlled by middles Ian McFarlane and Josh Guild, who recorded a combined 16 blocks.

“It’s a beautiful thing to watch,” Kuntz said. “We’re very balanced in our offense. We are not one-dimensional, we can bring it from five different places.

“Our team chemistry is great right now.”

San Marcos heads into the postseason having won four of its last five matches.
