Chargers claw Tigers after sluggish start

The Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team started slow in SLO on Wednesday, but ended up rallying for a 15-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 win at San Luis Obispo High.

“They came out on fire, and after a two-hour drive through the rain we just weren’t ready,” said coach Chris Hughes.

Once the cobwebs were cleared, DP (16-7, 4-0) took control. Jay Larinan had 12 kills and Robbie Mestas put down eight kills and three solo blocks. Will McCracken chipped in another four solo blocks.

Perhaps the best thing Hughes saw all night was in the stands, as he noticed the frosh/soph and JV players cheering on the varsity squad fervently as the match wore on.

“When we got on the bus afterwards, I told all those guys that the varsity would be at their next game the whole time to support them. It’s the right thing to do,” he said.

It just so happens that the next game is a big one at Santa Barbara High on Tuesday.

“It’s gonna take a lot of positive energy, because you walk into that gym and you’re already down 3-0 because of the atmosphere,” he said.
