Wind, dirty sand and lady bugs were the elements beach volleyball players and fans had to deal with Friday at the AVP Nivea Santa Barbara Open at West Beach.The shifting wind made receiving serves and hitting high sets a challenge. Rocks, shells and small pieces of driftwood sometimes created a nuisance for players on the court and fans walking barefoot around courts. Camille Wissman won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly on Thursday as the Santa Barbara High girls swimmers defeated San Marcos 104-79 on Thursday. A gust of wind made a big difference in Dos Pueblos' softball game on Friday.The Chargers had a 4-1 lead over first-place Buena, but a pop-up to the shortstop in the fifth inning blew all the way back in front of the pitcher's circle and ended up bouncing to the dirt. Since the bases were loaded with two outs, the runners were going no matter what and three runs scored. INDIAN WELLS — The UCSB women's tennis team made it past UC Davis on Friday morning to advance to the semifinals of the Big West tournament in Indian Wells. Mario Hollands was brilliant on Friday in the opener of a three-game series, tossing a complete game over UC Riverside, 5-1.The junior left-hander pitched like his ace status suggested, allowing just seven hits without walking a batter while striking out five.
