DP singles lead the way, Chargers beat Royals

Sasha Gryaznov, Christian Edstrom, and Richard Cheng won eight of nine sets — losing only 10 games between them — to lead Dos Pueblos to a 13-5 win over visiting San Marcos on Thursday.

Dos Pueblos managed to win five sets against San Marcos’ strong doubles teams.

The Chargers (7-4, 2-2) were playing without doubles players Andy Silverstein and Peter Shao, and continued to suffer through injuries as the match went on. Cheng came out after his second set with a sore back, Eric Zmolek slammed his arm into the fence and Malcolm Sutton pulled a stomach muscle, but DP gritted it out.

San Marcos (7-2, 1-2) has been outstanding in doubles all season, but the Chargers shuffled things up a bit and took five of the nine tandem sets. Only the tandem of Austin Cano/Eric Katz stayed healthy and swept. In their first round they fell behind 5-4 but won the next three games to take the set.

“Spectators from both teams were not disappointed today, as both teams displayed high-level tennis,” said coach Liz Frech.
