Gauchos stuffed by the Cardinal

STANFORD — A strong second quarter propelled No. 3 Stanford to a 13-8 victory over No. 9 UCSB on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatics Center.

With the loss, UCSB falls to 10-10 on the year and 0-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Stanford improved to 16-1 and 4-0 in MPSF games.

Junior Milos Golic was the first to strike when he scored the first goal just 30 seconds into the game on a six-on-five. During the next possession, Jacob Smith tied the game during a Stanford power play.

Golic responded for the Gauchos four minutes later to give UCSB another one-goal lead, but Paul Rudolph tallied a goal with 34 seconds left in the first to tie things up at two-all.

Unfortunately for the Gauchos, that was the closest they would get the rest of the way. Stanford scored in its first three possessions during the second quarter to gain a 5-2 lead just 1:33 into the period.

The Cardinal ended up outscoring UCSB 8-2 during the second frame to gain a comfortable 10-4 advantage heading into halftime.

With a pair of goals in the third quarter and the first goal of the final frame, UCSB managed to climb back into the game at 11-7 with 6:05 to play, but Stanford closed the door.

Smith tallied his fifth goal of the game during the ensuing Cardinal possession to put the score at 12-7 and Alex Pulido stretched the lead to six goals with 3:51 to go. Golic tallied his sixth goal of the game with 47 seconds remaining as the Gauchos fell short, 13-8.

Golic?s six goals in the loss tie his season-high. In goal, Fraser Bunn made three stops in the first half while Myles Christian posted three in the second.

UCSB will return to Campus Pool next weekend for a four-game homestand, which will begin with a doubleheader against Cal and Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 7. The first game is slated for a noon start.
