SBCC downed by Bulldogs 42-6 in opener

City College got a taste of smashmouth football from county rival Hancock on Saturday night and the Vaqueros took some lumps in the process.

The Bulldogs dominated the line of scrimmage and piled up 359 yards rushing in rolling to a 42-6 nonconference win in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at Righetti High. It was the 15th straight victory in the series for Hancock, which holds a 28-20-1 advantage in the rivalry.

Hancock’s Thomas Sua rushed for two scores in the first quarter and Greg Watson picked off a John Uribe pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown as the Bulldogs stormed out to a 21-0 lead after just over 11 minutes.

SBCC coach Craig Moropoulos was disappointed his team had problems with a basic fundamental.

“Defensively, we need to tackle better, that’s the No. 1 thing,” he said.

Ryan Anglin led Hancock’s rushing attack with 98 yards on 11 carries followed by Gunnar Jesperson with 81 yards on five carries and one touchdown and Matt Macanas with 73 yards on 13 carries.

SBCC’s lone touchdown came in the second quarter on a 3-yard pass from Uribe to running back Tristan Carter.

For Uribe, the record-setting freshman quarterback from Santa Barbara High, it was a tough college debut. He completed 25 of 48 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown, and he was intercepted twice.

Brian Felt was the Vaqueros’ leading receiver with nine catches for 97 yards. Oscar Medina added six receptions for 71 yards.

SBCC struggled to run the football against a stout Hancock defense led by linebacker Brennan Locker. Counting sacks, the Vaqueros had a negative 7 yards rushing.

“They (the Bulldogs) were a physical team and we didn’t run football and that hurts us,” said Moropoulos.

Things don’t get any easier for SBCC. The Vaqueros’ next game is their home opener against Canyons, the No. 1-ranked team in Southern California.
