After competing in the hilly terrain and cool air of the Westmont Invitational a week ago, Westmont Men’s and Women’s Cross Country competed on the flat course and in the heat of the Cal State Bakersfield Invitational on Saturday. STANFORD — The Gaucho women and men both took sixth place at the Stanford Cross Country Invitational, held on a hot Saturday afternoon at the Stanford Golf Course.The women appeared to be on their way to a top-5 team finish, but Amanda Moreno was forced to retire due to an asthma attack with less than a kilometer remaining in the race. Santa Barbara's David Larson biked his way to the Olympic Course title at the Carpinteria Triathlon on Sunday, finishing the 40 kilometer circuit faster than anyone else en route to a winning overall time of two hours, 11 minutes and 40 seconds.Susan Corti, of Westlake Village, won the women's race and Rowena Spence repeated as women's champion on the sprint course. The 13 girls volleyball teams which played in Carpinteria's volleyball tourney on Saturday got to see plenty of court-time, with each squad playing 10 games to 25 points before the top four advanced to the playoffs.While neither the Warriors, Bishop Diego or Cate made it through, Carpinteria was able to pick up a win over eventual-champion Nordhoff.
